SWEET

I don't usually review in this genre but this just has to be the most professional non-professional hip hop song i have ever heard. Everything is great but the guitar solo is exceptionally good. maybe the piano wasn't exactly in my taste but you can't love everything. and i'm not too fond of this music genre to start with. Just be aware that you have totally blown me away on this one. I can imagine how rap would go really well in this piece. good luck with all your future work!

Still don't understand why this always reminds me of The Doors >.<

haywirehaywire responds:

the doors? haha thanks alot for the review man, im glad you like it.

I needed to listen to this song so bad!!!

Very well done. although it inst that complicated, you have successfully made my day allot better. From that mesmerizing guitar to the slow drums who just say "Hey! just chill dude! this song is worth relaxing too", from the slow strings who just make every note sound like a miracle to that background weird instrument you used that sounds alot like a guitar played backwards with allot of cutoff.

This song made my day because it just makes everything sound seem so simple. Although you did a super good job on this one i think there are still ways you could improve:

- The backwards guitar pattern should be played about maybe 2 times before getting the strings in.

- then after you get the strings out, there should be another guitar riff that is more powerful and that gets lowder and louder for about 20 seconds then it releases and all you hear is the original guitar riff and the backwards guitar.

-the end should seriously be a fade out because for the moment, its kinda dissapointing.

Very awesome song with a very lower score! seriously someone should do something about that.

If you like your own song, witch dear god i hope you do or else i call that stealing, i think you should listen to the album "today" by junkie XL. because your song really reminded me of that particular album.

Peace out!

Complete Chaos

No offence, i'm sure everything sounded great separated but right when the first bass came in, it was complete madness.

Not bad for a first D'n'B, i'm working on my first hardcore right now. but seriously, the song would probably sound allot better if you try screwing with the volume a little bit, because in some part of the song, there is a drastic change of volume and others, its just all pilled onto each other with no consent what so ever. the high lead that only has two notes, you know the one, just doesn't really fit in if there is no melody change to justify its existence. seriously i thought the fire alarm was going off next door.

The beggining would also need some effects like some reverb or something to make it sound more fluid.

Anyhow, nice try! just needs a few adjustments!

LOST-R34LITY responds:

Yeah I have been tweaking it, and will continue to do so ^_^

But yeah I know it sounds a bit chaotic. Especially if you take the compressor off <. <

But anyway thanks for the tips, I will look into them. Feedback is always appreciated. Also, good luck with your hardcore song. Let me know when it's released and I'll be sure to check it out :)

Sorry to burst your bubble

But although this song is really awesome and sounds very proffessional, it seems like a more complex taste wich is loved by some but hated by others. I could name a bunch of people i know who would zero this song at first sight. Great song man but i heard some parts where you could of gone way further. In my eyes you could of even made this song about 2 minutes longer by going higher at 3minutes sharp and building a climax there and then going down to the drums that you did (might need to be a bit more intense drums if you do the build tho). just puting the idea out there. Sounds really proffessional. i cant thank you enough for making this 6 minutes!

takes breathtaking to a whole new level!

Very good song by anyone's standards (Or so they should die). Nice use of reverb and the piano sounds superb. the choice of piano was perfect for this song. still think the strings came in a bit too fast though. and the epiano at the beginning didn't really fit in (reminded me of riders on the storm by the doors) I was trying to do a piano song like this yesterday) but i ended up getting carried away and doing A Different Kind of Pain witch is obviously of incomparable quality xP. i hope you get far with this track. you have my full support on this one... if that counts for something. well this kinda breaks my review only record, but i had to give you my word on this one. once again, awesome song. Its the best song on newgrounds for all i can remember!

Trottimus responds:

Wow, this is a very flattering review, I can't thank you enough!

I can't say I've heard A Different Kind of Pain, but I'd like to hear what you come up with the next time you attempt a piano piece.

Best song on Newgrounds? I'm not sure about that, but I'm incredibly thankful you feel that way.

All the Best

hmmm... i guess...

when i clicked on the link this wasn't exactly what i had in mind. Even when i started it up i was expecting some huge build up to occur since this song would be excellent. of course it would also need some other stuff that i will mention later in this review but thats my general point of view that i'm going to try to back up. It's been a long time since my last review so i'm going to use this song as a warm up since i'm kinda judging for this huge competition in the coming week. Hope you enjoy the feedback. I won't be following any pattern with my review like i usually do, because its seriously a pain in the ass and right now, i just don't feel like it xP.

- The instruments you selected are appropriate yet unoriginal. First of all, there really isn't enough instruments resulting in a very repetitive and somewhat boring sound. The drums are also lacking: when i started the song, even though i realized it was in the ambient category, i was sure it was going to jump into drum and bass since the melody is almost perfect for that genre. I could imagine it now! super fast and bassy drums, phased basses mixed with some cutoff here and there and i little use of gross beat would really, if done correctly, make a hit of a song.

- Some thing that you should really check in this song, is the effects. adding some reverbe... well actually... allot of reverbe and some filter effects would also make this song allot more interesting. especially for the drums because, for the time being, they are seriously "out of it". the samples don't fit in with the song at all! especially for the snare. but some added effects may be able to ease the fall of the drums. I absolutely love the kick though.

- My favorite part of the song is from 2:43 to 3:30. although the absence of FX samples does make it sound a little empty... ok maybe allot empty... but it is still the most innovative part of the piece and it does sound quiet interesting.

- the song really hasnt been well looped. something that might work is that on what ever program your using, you should copy everything you have and make it so that it happens three times in a row. That way, you can cut out the second loop, the one in the middle, and you will have the residue at the end of the loop also at the beggining. there are other ways of doing it but thats what i would do.

NOTE: it's not that bad, its just not really that good. Some more work may be required to make it what it should be. sorry if i cut short on the positive sides i just wanted to concentrate on what needed to be done. I know i didn't talk about everything but this should still prove as a satisfactory review.

- Simon (lol)

Very nice!!

Very impressive from beginning to end! Nice beat, instruments, melody... An overall awesome that makes people just keep on asking for more. Although it is hard to believe this song could definitely be better with some perfect build up spots left empty and some volume anomalies here and there. This song definitely has the power and the possibility but is it really there or does it need one final push to the top?
I wont make this review like i usually do with the Strong point and Weak point system because i realized over time that this poses a few problems. For the most part, people don't always agree as in what may be a weak point for me might be a strong point for others otherwise making me a public enemy. And also it disables the possibility of you knowing how good or bad your song is before you read the whole review witch is also why my star number will be as close to the average as possible not necessarily because i think that its just not to break your review average. If there are any things you do not agree on or otherwise, completely hate about my review, just post it in the response, I would really appreciate it.

- I really liked the intro setting the beat for the song but i really did think that a short bass would of really added some music to it but that would of possibly forced you to change the way you build up the song since it would be exactly compatible with the synth that you added after. Very nice choice of drums! Classic trance drums never sounded this good!
- Although the instruments used in this song are really good, some of them might need revisiting. For instance, the bass that comes in at 2:05 and countinues for the rest of the song should start out continuous and then after the drum roll that stops at 2:31, should be spaced until the rest of the song with the exception of calm parts without drums.
- I noticed that there are some instruments in the song you just added for a complex sound and to avoid repetition but some of them you should really make louder because they have the quality to add to the build thous make the song longer and better
- I love the general sound of the song. It sounds very professional, very calculated, nothing is left to luck everything is there for a reason. Although it doesnt exactly show much in terms of effects and such.
... at this point in the review my sound card has completely crashed out of nowhere... so i will not countinue with the details after all, i think i have covered all the things that might need refinement. anyway... you and digital pulse really rock at this!! you should consider making some more and seeing how it would turn out. if you guys make a good team, you guys should make a separate account so that you could both benefit equally. anyway i will tell you, this is the kind of sound, of song that most artists on newgrounds could only dream to create. Very nice work hope i hear more like this soon! Peace!

Kalapsia responds:

thanks for the lengthy review. now i'll respond to your points.

- to tell you the truth i actually thought my intro was extremely bland because of the classic trance drums, really DP and I felt like adding a nice long intro, but i shortened it quite a bit.

-i somewhat agree, i was actually thinking of turning up the volume for the bass or something to make it more dominant. i was also thinking of just making a better bass melody really.

-i completely agree, i was planning on making the plucky guitar louder.

- right, the mixing isn't so great, i was going for ambientish/melodic/progressive kind of atmosphere. i think i hit the right spot though.

-sucks that your soundcard died, i was looking forward to some more critiszm :(

again thanks for the review, i appreciate it

Nice effort

Nice effort you've put into this song!! it's noticeable from beginning to end and it's really something you can appreciate from this song. Nice thought of mixing some house and trance together. but this idea kind of went wrong and Ill explain why. But first, this songs got strong points, but there are a lot of things that i found a bit out of place.

Strong points:
- Nice use of all the instruments! Although some sound better then others, they all fit the mood and the style. except maybe for one certain instrument, but i will get back to that later in the weak point section.
- Nice use of all the effects, although i think some of the synths could have been more reverbed, the overall sound that the effects give to the song is great. That includes all the ambientish pads with the reverb effects. Even if there isnt really that much, it still makes a huge difference in my ears.
- Nice and original transitions. even if they dont always exactly have anything to do with the song. (I will talk about this later in the weak points)
- Love all the variety in the music and all the different instruments and such. but this is also a little negative since all the variety makes the song sound that much shorter. I'm not saying you should take off certain variations, but you should take what you've got right now, and make it longer by looping some of the synths together and not cuting the end like if it still continued.
- Nice variations in the drums also. Taking them on and off at exactly the right time never goes without notice. for me anyway.

Weak Points:
- As i said before, there are alot of interesting instruments in this piece. but one of the least interesting is the high pad from 0:56 to 1:08 which i found a bit odd and out of place. I think that if you should probably revisit that part of the song and definitly look for a more fiting synth or just completely take off that melody because the song defenitly has enough variation already.
- While talking of the transitions, i couldnt stop thinking of that one transition at 0:52. This transition is completely out of place. In fact, it seems like you just cut two songs together much like they would do it on the radio or something. the melody completely changes from before the transition and after, wich just makes it sound so odd.
- The ending for this song seems to just be a quick fix solution. But it just doesnt work. There was no editing involved; its like you just cut it in the middle of the song or something. and the result it has given just cannot be ingored. you should seriously go in there and add something. The minimum you should do is at least do a fade out at the end. at least it wont give the impression that it is just some loop that whent wrong.
- You should also work on the length of the song since people would probably like more then 2 minutes of such great music. You could make it alot long simply by looping the instruments for longer. it's quick, easy, and is very appreciated.

NOTES: this song just doesn't sound like it is complete. especially with the crapy ending, it just sounds like a demo. The ending that it has right now isn't finished, but i was very interested by where it was going. you should probably continues your song from there since you were going in the right direction.

Basic works

Yeah this song is good but as I said, there's nothing to complex. No risks taken, just basic works. but let's get behind what really makes this song tick.

Strong Points:

- Nice usage of the synths, giving the song a kind of intimidating feel to it. but still could of made some extra synths stray away from the main melody to make it feel like something changes through the song.

-Nice drums, but seems to bee a bit to loud for this song. maybe if you try taking it down a notch it would help to the feel of the song. Also if you could find a bass drum with a bit more bass to it, that always helps.

- I really do like what you've done with the panning synth throughout the song. giving it a feel of distance really sets it apart.

Weak Points:

- Not much changes throughout the song except for the ambient-ish part of the song. really should make it longer and give it some advance with added synths and changing melodies and this could actually make an awesome song.

- as I said before for the drums, and maybe if you find more realistic drums because the drums you got there are a bit, more like really, to fake more my taste.

NOTE: this song would be great for a flash/video game where you introduce a new character or something. as a kind of theme song. You should also try taking off the fade in/out for this song to make it an easy loop if you are to keep it like this because that's really what it seems like from my point of view.

The extreme of feel good music.

VERY NICE. I dont know if i qualify this as ambient but it really does sound awesome. I'm gona try to make a thorough review and for the most part... try to find bad sides to this song wich really is a challenge since i love it so much. I have never heard of you but you have just been faved my boy xP. aight!!

Strong Points:

- great oppening with the strings and the square. the strings really set it in a relaxing feel as the square antisipates something bigger. really giving it an awesome feel to it.
- Awesome use of the delay with the synth that opens at 1:25. adding to the godlike feel.
- Very heart warming feel that doesnt let down for the whole song.
- Nice drums but it does have one issue wich i will talk about later in the review.

Weak Points:

- drums are somewhat a little to strong/loud taking alot off of the ambient/ish feel. but replacing it with something different that is as much appreciable so its not really that much of a weak point
- some additional effect like mod X could of been used for the intro. but it's good the way it is.
- drums (especially the kick) are of low quality and may need some fine tunning.
- variety during the song, besides the flute, would of been nice.
- you made it with her in mind and how did you come up with this exactly? you must of been thinking of yourself.
